Italian Research Day in the World: “Looking Beyond” exhibition

Cattura

On the occasion of Italian Research Day in the World, the Italian Cultural Institute and the Embassy of Italy in Addis Ababa present the exhibition “Guardare oltre / Looking beyond.”

The project consists of an exhibition of images acquired by the COSMO SkyMed satellite constellation. The aim is to highlight Italian research in science and space and raise awareness among the Ethiopian public of the multiple uses of satellite sensing technologies, particularly in agriculture, infrastructure, and the prevention and management of climate change and environmental disasters. The exhibition represents an opportunity to present and share an approach in which Italy firmly believes: putting science at the service of peace, security, and prosperity on our planet.

The exhibition is a result of a collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), the Italian Space Agency (ASI), and Telespazio S.p.A./e-GEOS and it aims to highlight Italian research in the space sector and raise awareness among the international public of the multiple uses of satellite sensing technologies for protecting the planet. The project offers a modular and flexible exhibition of satellite images acquired by the COSMO-SkyMed constellation, sourced from the Telespazio/e-GEOS and Italian Space Agency databases. The COSMO-SkyMed system is a constellation of five radar satellites (three first-generation and two second-generation) for Earth observation and it uses cutting-edge technology and high-resolution radar sensors to observe the Earth’s day and night, in all weather conditions.

The exhibition is curated by Filippo Maggia, one of Italy’s most internationally renowned experts in contemporary photography. It aims to offer an opportunity to reflect on current and urgent issues such as sustainable development and the protection of cultural and natural heritage, and to highlight the potential of satellite technology in the service of the Earth. It also stimulates a broader perspective on natural and anthropogenic terrestrial phenomena and on human interaction with the environment.
