A two chapters exhibition about Gea Casolaro’s workshop with Jacob Bizuneh, Makeda Bizuneh, Yonas Hailu, Martha Hailu, Meron Hailu, Hilina Mekonen and Yafet Mekonnen

The Italian Cultural Institute in Addis Ababa has started in 2013 a residing artist program, in order to enable Italian visual artists to develop an own project, which arose from the relation with the local reality, in Ethiopia, particularly in Addis Ababa. The idea of programming a series of residing Italian artists in AddisAbaba comes out after having noticed the complexity and elusiveness of the social reality of this African metropolis, especially if compared with the stereotyped and simple image common in Europe and in Italy. Enable an artist to observe, to explain and enter in relationship and dialogue with the urban reality of Addis Ababa, will be a kind of getting a new image and interpretation, free from stereotype and able to consider in a poetic way to project to the future, that even if disorderly convulsive way, create the basic aspects of Africa and her metropolis in the contemporary times.

The first invited artist is Gea Casolaro; she based her work on the image making the main point of her research on places characteristically highly tied (Buenos Aires, Sarajevo, Paris). In each of her work the interpretation of the reality and of the social contest she creates considerations which reaches universal subjects as memory and repression of past times, communication and media, the displacement of the point of view against the stereotyped image and the silent reality.

Gea Casolaro realized a workshop with the last year students of Alle School of Fine Arts and Design of the Addis Ababa University.

“I never put myself in the position of teacher, but I always tray to exchange with the young artist whomI works with. In this way Art become a practice to exchange knowledge, experiences, points of viewin order to enlarge our capacity of analysis and our consciousnessonpeople life and of the whole world.

For the workshop with the Alle’s students, I’d ask to each of them to choose a specific place in Addis that her or he think could be interesting for me to see.

Than we go all together to this place and we start shooting photos, exchanging our cameras. In this way at the end we will have either very similar picture or very different looks of the same thing, or very specific gaze on one or another details of that place, showing the multiplicity and complexity of each site from our collective point of view.

At the end it will be impossible to say that one picture is better or more “right” then another: every reality are build up by all the different subjectivity that pass troughs it, and show this concept in order to let understand the fundamental importance ofthe dialog, is my purpose.“
