Founded in the year 1960, the Italian Cultural Institute of Addis Ababa is operating in its new premises since 1974.

Like the other 90 Italian Cultural Institutes spread all over the world, this is an Institution, depending from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through which the Italian Government spreads the Italian language and culture in the world.

Among its activities it organizes cultural events trying from time to time to elaborate a program as wide as possible in order to meet primarily the requirements of the Ethiopian citizens as well as that of the Italian and International communities residing in Ethiopia.

It tries to balance the space dedicated to music by organizing in its Auditorium concerts of classical and jazz music as well as dance and drama shows, by displaying art exhibitions both by Ethiopian and Italian artists and by hosting meetings and seminars based on scientific and humanistic topics of particular interest, by showing several monthly Italian DVD films on large screen to the audience of adults and children accompanied by detailed film explanatory notes. Projections of imported films in 35mm are also performed.

Another important task of the Institute is the diffusion of the Italian language. Organizes on term basis Italian language courses, for beginner, intermediate and advanced supported by audiovisual on five levels each one of six hours a week for a total of sixty hours per term. The time table of lessons are as follows: Monday, Wednesday and Friday or Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 6:00 p.m. up to 7:50 .

The Institute assists students willing to continue their education in Italy and students to whom scholarship are granted: scholars, both foreigners and Italian, by putting at their disposal a rich library with more than 11.000 volumes, for their researches.

The library is opened to the public from Monday up to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
